PM Narendra Modi, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz Join International Kite Festival In Ahmedabad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz joined the vibrant International Kite Festival at Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront on Monday, immersing themselves in the colour, energy, and cultural richness of the annual event.

The festival marks Uttarayan, a significant period in the Hindu calendar symbolising the sun’s northward journey and the onset of summer. It draws participants and spectators from across India and around the world.

The two leaders received a traditional Gujarati welcome upon arrival, including scarves presented as a mark of respect.

Artists and performers from various parts of Gujarat showcased folk music and dance, creating a lively atmosphere for the visiting German leader.

PM Modi and Chancellor Merz later joined the kite flying festivities, with the Prime Minister flying a specially designed kite displaying the message ‘Bharat — Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, reflecting India’s philosophy of the world as one family.

Some kites featured the Indian tricolour, Hindu deities, and motifs representing both leaders.

Public Enthusiasm and International Participation

Large crowds gathered along the riverfront, waving Indian and German flags in a display of enduring friendship and growing bilateral partnership.

Several international participants were also present, and both leaders interacted with them, underscoring the festival’s global appeal.

PM Modi explained the cultural significance of Uttarayan’s decorations and traditions to Chancellor Merz, highlighting Gujarat’s rich heritage.

Chancellor Merz arrived in India earlier on Monday to enhance cooperation between the two nations.

Before the kite festival, the leaders visited Sabarmati Ashram to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, viewing an exhibition on his life and legacy, with Chancellor Merz recording remarks in the visitors’ book.

Later, PM Modi and Chancellor Merz are scheduled to hold bilateral talks at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.

The two leaders are expected to focus their discussions on trade and investment, technology, education, skilling, and mobility. They will also cover defence and security, science and innovation, green development, and people-to-people ties.

The Prime Minister’s Office stated that the two leaders will also review progress in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, which has recently completed 25 years.

They will exchange views on regional and global issues and engage with business and industry leaders from both countries. This interaction reinforces the long-standing cooperation and mutual trust between India and Germany.
