PM Narendra Modi Flags Supply Chain Risks; Stresses Resilience In Chips, Energy And Minerals

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday highlighted how recent global crises have disrupted supply chains. He underlined the need to establish secure and resilient systems in crucial sectors such as semiconductors, energy, and critical minerals.

Speaking at the inauguration of Kaynes Semicon’s OSAT facility in Sanand, PM Modi said the pandemic and ongoing conflicts have significantly affected global movement. These disruptions have impacted the flow of goods and raw materials worldwide.

“Whether it is chips, rare earth minerals or energy, all have been affected due to conflicts,” he said, noting the link between such disruptions and rapid global development.

“Break in the supply chain and its flow will impact humanity’s development,” PM Modi said, stressing the importance of India taking a leadership role in ensuring stability.

The Prime Minister recalled India’s strategic response during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on self-reliance and building capabilities in semiconductors. He also pointed to progress in artificial intelligence, clean energy, electric vehicles, defence, and electronics.

Referring to the India Semiconductor Mission launched in 2021, he described it as a reflection of the country’s ambition.

“This is not an industrial policy but an announcement of India’s self-confidence. Everyone can see its impact,” he said.

Ten semiconductor projects worth ₹1.6 lakh crore are currently underway across six states. These include projects by Kaynes Semicon and Micron Technology.

The next phase, India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, will focus on domestic production. It aims to build a complete ecosystem for materials and equipment.

The Prime Minister also highlighted initiatives to secure critical minerals. These include a recycling scheme and a rare earth corridor across Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.

“It would have been better if this work had started 30–40 years ago, but now India is working in mission mode. This decade is India’s decade,” he said.
