PM Modi’s ‘Visit Lakshadweep’ Campaign Conceals Deeper Intentions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Lakshadweep, shared snapshots of his interactions with locals, mesmerizing views of the pristine coastline, and his experience snorkelling. He expressed admiration for the island’s beauty and the warmth of its inhabitants in a tweet that quickly went viral.

This visit to the union territory was part of PM Modi’s extensive two-day tour of the South, including Tamil Nadu and Kerala, strategically planned ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In Lakshadweep, he inaugurated and laid the foundation for numerous development projects valued over Rs 1,150 crore while acknowledging the completion of several others over his government’s ten-year tenure.

Beyond highlighting Lakshadweep’s scenic allure, PM Modi advocated for it as a must-visit destination for adventurers. This trip marked his inaugural outing of the year and the commencement of BJP’s ‘Mission South’ in preparation for the upcoming elections.

Backing PM Modi’s call to promote Lakshadweep’s tourism, Home Minister Amit Shah praised its captivating beaches and azure lagoons, envisioning its potential to evolve into a global tourist hotspot.

Nevertheless, PM Modi’s Lakshadweep visit delved deeper than mere tourism promotion.

Emphasizing the significance of ‘Vocal for Local,’ PM Modi portrayed Lakshadweep not just as a cluster of islands but as a repository of timeless traditions and a testament to its people’s resilience and spirit.

His advocacy for domestic tourism aligns with his previous appeals, urging Indians to choose local destinations for weddings and tourism. He underscored this during his ‘Mann ki Baat’ address and reiterated it at the Uttarakhand Investors’ Summit, urging citizens to consider hosting destination weddings in India.

Additionally, PM Modi’s endorsement of Lakshadweep as a tourist haven may be seen as a strategic move in response to the Maldives’ popularity among Indian travelers. Recent geopolitical dynamics and concerns over the Maldives’ growing ties with China have prompted India to focus on Lakshadweep’s potential, given its advantageous proximity to monitor Chinese activities in the region.

Furthermore, PM Modi’s outreach to the Muslim populace in Lakshadweep, highlighting the BJP government’s initiatives for Haj Yatris and ease of Haj visa processes, holds political significance. This gesture aimed at the Muslim community not only in Lakshadweep but also in Kerala, emphasizing the close ties between the two regions.

PM Modi’s address seemingly intended to woo Muslim voters in both Lakshadweep and Kerala ahead of the impending elections, acknowledging the Union territory’s reliance on Kerala for economy and resources.
