PM Modi’s Old Scribbled Notes Resurface; Offers Poetic Tribute To Vande Mataram

Prime Minister Narendra Modi added an unexpected personal layer to the Lok Sabha’s special discussion on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram on Monday, drawing from verses he had penned years ago in his own handwritten notebook.

The rare glimpse into the Prime Minister’s private reflections set the tone for a discourse rooted in India’s cultural memory and civilisational heritage.

PM Modi’s remarks intertwined references from the Vedas with the philosophical visions of Sri Aurobindo, Rabindranath Tagore and Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, presenting Vande Mataram as an enduring symbol of national consciousness.

A post shared by ‘Modi Archive’ revealed the note containing PM Modi’s early verses, in which he invoked rivers such as the Sindhu and Ganga as emblems of continuity and belonging.

The Prime Minister reiterated that Indians have always understood the nation not merely as territory but as ‘Mother Earth’, recalling the Vedic line ‘Putroham Prithivyah’ and the timeless declaration, ‘Janani Janmabhoomisch Swargadapi Gariyasi’.

He also highlighted the differing yet complementary ways in which India has been imagined: Sri Aurobindo’s view of the nation as a spiritual mother, Tagore’s poetic depiction of her as Bhuvan-Man-Mohini, and Bankim Chandra’s portrayal of a powerful, ten-armed Durga symbolising strength and resolve.

PM Modi stressed that this idea of India as simple, steadfast and maternal remains deeply embedded in the national psyche.

Any move to undermine Vande Mataram, he said, strikes at the heart of this shared cultural inheritance.

Beyond Politics: A Mantra of Unity

The Prime Minister underlined that Vande Mataram transcends politics, describing it as a mantra of sacrifice and unity that once provided emotional leadership to the freedom struggle.

It carried the aspirations of countless Indians who fought colonial rule and dreamed of an independent nation.

By revisiting notes he had written decades earlier, PM Modi sought to underline the continuity of the song’s message and its lasting relevance.

He emphasised that the 150-year journey of Vande Mataram is not only a reminder of the past but also a call to strengthen India’s resolve to emerge as a self-reliant, developed nation by 2047.

Closing his remarks, the Prime Minister urged Members of Parliament to honour the legacy of the song and ensure its spirit continues to illuminate India’s path ahead.

The moment, blending personal memory with national symbolism, added depth to the Parliamentary debate and reaffirmed Vande Mataram as more than a composition, as a living sentiment embedded in India’s collective identity.
