Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said his visit to Malaysia would help expand economic engagement and strengthen cultural connections between India and Malaysia. He made the statement as he departed for India after concluding his two-day official tour.
Posting on social media platform X, PM Modi recalled, “Last year, I was unable to visit Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit. But, I had promised my friend, PM Anwar Ibrahim that I would come to Malaysia at the earliest opportunity.”
“And now, my first international visit of 2026 took place in Malaysia. This visit will boost economic and cultural linkages between our nations. My gratitude to PM Anwar Ibrahim, the Government and people of Malaysia for the affection,” PM Modi added.
The Prime Minister thanked the Malaysian leadership, government, and citizens for the warmth shown to him and said the visit would play a significant role in strengthening cooperation across economic and cultural spheres.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “A memorable visit concludes! After a successful visit to Malaysia, marked by special warmth and hospitality and anchored in our close cultural bonds, PM Narendra Modi has departed for India. The visit produced significant outcomes that will add substantial strength to India–Malaysia ties.”
During the visit, PM Modi held discussions with business leaders from both countries, stating that the CEO Forum created new possibilities for trade and investment. He also met Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at Seri Perdana, where the two leaders reviewed collaboration in areas such as infrastructure, energy, information technology, and biotechnology.
They also agreed to step up cooperation in security, defence technologies, Artificial Intelligence, digital innovation, and the semiconductor sector.
PM Modi said people-to-people engagement remains the foundation of India–Malaysia friendship. He highlighted initiatives such as the Social Security Agreement, free tourist e-visas, the rollout of UPI in Malaysia, expanded university exchanges, and skill development programmes as steps that would bring citizens of both countries closer.
During his stay, the Prime Minister interacted with members of the Indian diaspora, met Indian-origin leaders, and paid tribute to INA veteran Jeyaraj Raja Rao, reaffirming the deep historical and cultural links between India and Malaysia.
