Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a stage production inspired by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Anand Math in Ekta Nagar, Narmada district, Gujarat, on Friday.
The cultural presentation took place ahead of the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
The National School of Drama presented the production, titled Anand Math: Maa Ne Phir Bulaya Hai, with approximately 300 performers appearing on a 100-by-100-foot stage.
The 90-minute show reinterpreted the 1882 literary work, which features ‘Vande Mataram’, India’s national song.
Through its portrayal of patriotism, sacrifice and commitment to the motherland, the performance explored the novel’s enduring message of national consciousness.
It also linked the work’s historical significance with present-day India, emphasising citizens’ responsibility to help shape the country’s future while upholding its cultural traditions.
The theatrical presentation was among the highlights of the two-day Rashtriya Ekta Diwas programme at Ekta Nagar, where the Statue of Unity stands. The celebrations carry added importance this year as ‘Vande Mataram’ completes 150 years.
The evening programme also included Ekta Prakash Parv, which uses elaborate lighting displays to showcase India’s heritage, diversity and development.
Visitors can explore a 530-metre illuminated route along Valley of Flowers Road, tracing the journey from ancient to modern India, alongside a 180-metre Glow Tunnel featuring regional traditions, architecture, folk dances and handicrafts.
Artists from across the country contributed to displays illuminated by more than 1.5 crore LED lights.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also planned to attend the Narmada Aarti later that evening.
Earlier on Friday, PM Modi launched Bharat Parv 2026, which will run until November 15 and showcase the traditions, cuisines, crafts and tourism attractions of states and Union Territories.
On Saturday, he is scheduled to honour Patel at the Statue of Unity and inaugurate projects while laying foundation stones for additional tourism and infrastructure works worth over ₹426 crore.
Planned attractions include an IRCTC hotel, an Ekta Cruise, a Rain Forest facility and an Eco Trail, alongside improvements to essential services and visitor amenities.
