PM Modi, Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez Discuss Expanding Bilateral Ties Across Sectors

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday received a telephone call from the Acting President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Delcy Eloína Rodríguez Gomez, with the two leaders holding detailed discussions on strengthening the partnership between the two countries.

“Spoke with Acting President of Venezuela, Ms. Delcy Rodríguez. We agreed to further deepen and expand our bilateral partnership in all areas, with a shared vision of taking India-Venezuela relations to new heights in the years ahead,” PM Modi said in a post on X after the call.

Focus On Trade, Energy And Technology Cooperation

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the leaders agreed to expand cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade and investment, energy, digital technology, health, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges.

The PMO added that both sides reviewed the overall trajectory of bilateral ties and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

Global South, Multilateral Engagement And Longstanding Ties

“Both leaders exchanged views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest and underscored the importance of their close cooperation for the Global South. The two leaders agreed to remain in touch,” the PMO statement said.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that India and Venezuela have traditionally enjoyed cordial relations, underpinned by shared perspectives on major international, political, and economic issues. The two countries actively cooperate in multilateral forums and marked the 64th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2023. Resident embassies have been functioning in Caracas and New Delhi for over four decades.

Venezuela has also emerged as one of India’s largest oil suppliers. As part of capacity-building initiatives, Venezuelan experts are sent to India annually under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme, while the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) has approved four scholarships for Venezuela starting from the academic year 2017. Currently, around 50 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and 30 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) reside in Venezuela.
