PM Modi Urges Semiconductor Companies To Support India’s Next Chip-Sector Expansion

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called on major semiconductor companies to contribute to the next stage of India’s chip-sector expansion during a roundtable discussion in New Delhi. He underlined the need for sustained cooperation between the government and industry to build a stronger foundation for India’s future technology capabilities, according to a PMO statement.

PM Modi highlighted the country’s expanding pool of skilled professionals, growing technology adoption and improving infrastructure as key strengths for the semiconductor ecosystem. He encouraged companies to work more closely with India on workforce development, research and innovation while supporting emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

The Prime Minister referred to the government’s goal of training one crore people in AI and said combining India’s human resources with the knowledge and experience of global companies could generate substantial opportunities.

The roundtable brought together senior executives and representatives from leading organisations, including SEMI, Micron, Infineon, Applied Materials, ASML, Merck, Tokyo Electron Ltd, Fujifilm, AMD, Intel, Tata Electronics, Lam Research, Rapidus, NXP, Foxconn, Semiconductor Devices, Advantest, Celesta Capital, CG Power and IBM Research, among others.

PM Modi said India must seek an early leadership position in emerging technologies as the semiconductor ecosystem transitions from its foundational stage towards larger-scale development. He reiterated the government’s intention to maintain a predictable, responsive policy environment while ensuring regulations adapt to technological progress and changing industry requirements.

The Prime Minister asked industry representatives to submit recommendations on policy and administrative measures and assured them that the government would consider their inputs as it strengthens the sector.

The participating CEOs acknowledged the progress achieved in semiconductor manufacturing, chip design, infrastructure and talent development. They highlighted the opportunities emerging through ISM 2.0 and India’s scope to develop capabilities across manufacturing, research and development, advanced technologies and supporting industries.
