Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday laid the foundation for the Vadhvan Port in Palghar, Maharashtra, which is set to become the largest container port in India. The Rs 76,000-crore project, Modi said, will transform the nation’s economic landscape. During his speech, he criticized the opposition for obstructing the project’s development both before 2014 and after 2019.
Modi emphasized that the port will attract an investment of Rs 12 lakh crore and significantly boost regional trade. He highlighted the strategic location of Palghar, suitable for all-weather port operations. Modi also condemned the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government for halting progress on the port, which was initially slated to be functional by 2020.
The Prime Minister assured that the Vadhvan Port will drive economic growth in the region by facilitating thousands of ships and containers. He announced plans to connect the port with rail and highway networks to enhance trade. Modi also praised Maharashtra’s potential, noting its rich maritime history and resources.
In addition to the port, Modi revealed that the government has approved the development of the Dighi Port Industrial Area. He linked these developments to the vision of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, underscoring their importance for Maharashtra’s and India’s progress.
Modi highlighted the government’s focus on coastal development and fisheries, citing the doubling of fish production in India over the past decade. He also noted the establishment of ministries dedicated to tribal and fishermen’s welfare, as well as initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, which empowers women in the fisheries sector.
