PM Modi Unveils Bioethanol Plant In Assam And Lays Foundation For Polypropylene Unit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Assam Bioethanol Plant and laid the foundation stone for a polypropylene unit at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) in Golaghat, Assam.

The initiatives, valued at approximately ₹18,000 crore, mark a significant push towards clean energy, industrial growth and reduced dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that September 14 marked an important milestone for both Assam and India’s development journey.

Earlier in the day, he had laid the foundation stones for new connectivity and health projects in Darrang. He emphasised that the energy security-related ventures in Golaghat would reinforce Assam’s role as a key contributor to India’s energy landscape.

PM Modi highlighted the inauguration of a modern plant producing bioethanol from bamboo as a matter of pride for Assam.

The project, he said, not only symbolises the region’s potential in clean energy production but also creates new opportunities for local farmers and youth.

“These projects will accelerate Assam’s development, strengthen its industrial base, and open new avenues for employment,” he stated.

Foundation for Polypropylene Unit

Alongside the bioethanol plant, the Prime Minister laid the foundation for a polypropylene unit at NRL. He underlined that the unit would reduce the state’s dependence on imports of petrochemical products, boost industrial output and add value to Assam’s economy.

PM Modi reminded the audience that India, as the fastest-growing major economy, faces rising demands for electricity, gas and fuel. For decades, the country had relied heavily on foreign sources for these needs, spending lakhs of crores annually abroad.

“This situation needed to be changed,” he said, affirming that India is now on a path towards self-reliance in energy.

He added that the government is simultaneously exploring new domestic oil and gas reserves and expanding green energy production.

Recalling his Red Fort announcement of the ‘Samudra Manthan’ initiative, the Prime Minister spoke about expert assessments indicating significant reserves beneath India’s seas.

To harness these resources for national development, he cited the launch of the National Deepwater Exploration Mission.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the warmth and affection he received in the Northeast and credited the people of Assam for their support.

He concluded that the newly inaugurated and proposed projects would act as catalysts for transforming Assam into a hub of clean energy, industry and innovation while strengthening India’s long-term energy security.
