PM Modi To Visit Flood-Hit Punjab On September 9; Will Review Himachal Pradesh Disaster Impact

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit flood-hit areas of Punjab on September 9 to review the situation first-hand.

Officials said he will then travel to neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, where monsoon-related devastation has severely affected the region.

State BJP President Sunil Jakhar said the Prime Minister has been closely monitoring the crisis. He added that the visit would allow the national leadership to understand the ground realities and provide maximum support to affected communities.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Chauhan had earlier visited Punjab to evaluate conditions.

Scale of Losses in Punjab

Two central inter-ministerial teams recently completed their inspection of Punjab’s flood damage and are preparing their reports for the Union government.

The Punjab administration estimates a financial loss of ₹13,289 crore.

Punjab Revenue Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian said that floods have hit 1,996 villages across 22 districts, affecting 387,013 people. Authorities have rescued 22,854 individuals so far, with the largest evacuations carried out in Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Ferozepur and Amritsar districts.

Officials indicated that the Prime Minister is likely to land in Amritsar on Tuesday afternoon after casting his vote in the vice-presidential election in Delhi. He is expected to hold a review meeting with state ministers and senior officers.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh continues to grapple with extensive damage from relentless rainfall.

Two Union Home Ministry teams will be in Chamba and Kullu districts until 10 September to evaluate the destruction to infrastructure and agriculture.

The state government has already reported losses of ₹3,959 crore, with 869 roads blocked, 1,572 power lines down and 389 water supply schemes disrupted.

The Congress-led state government has demanded a special relief package from the Centre, noting that the death toll from monsoon disasters has reached 366. Last year, Himachal Pradesh suffered losses exceeding ₹10,000 crore due to natural calamities.
