On Saturday, PM Narendra Modi will launch the National Natural Farming Mission (NNFM) at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) campus in Pusa, New Delhi.
The flagship programme seeks to transform Indian agriculture by encouraging sustainable, eco-friendly practices, lowering farmers’ input costs, and improving soil health.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan confirmed the launch on Thursday. He made the announcement after a high-level video conference with state agriculture ministers.
“Prime Minister Modi will launch the National Natural Farming Mission at ICAR in Pusa (Delhi) on August 23,” he said, emphasising the government’s commitment to environmentally responsible farming.
The initiative, however, forms part of a wider national strategy to place India at the forefront of global sustainable agriculture.
ICAR, in coordination with state governments, has been preparing extensively for the event.
The mission aims not only to expand natural farming across the country but also to contribute to international efforts to safeguard the environment and mitigate climate change.
The National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) received Cabinet approval on 25 November 2024. It is being implemented as a standalone Centrally Sponsored Scheme until the end of the 15th Finance Commission period (2025–26).
The mission, however, employs scientific approaches to natural farming, aiming to strengthen soil fertility, reduce reliance on chemical inputs, and enhance climate resilience.
Alongside the mission, the government will organise the ‘Developed Agriculture Sankalp Abhiyan’ from 3 to 18 October during the Rabi season.
Branded as ‘Vijay Parv’, the campaign will promote the mission’s objectives and bring together farmers, researchers, and policymakers in a coordinated effort.
With rising concerns over climate change, environmental stress, and the health risks of pesticides, the NNFM positions as a major step towards greener, safer, and more resilient farming in India.
