PM Modi To Pay Homage To Martyrs Of Assam Movement Tomorrow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that during his upcoming visit to Assam, he will pay homage to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement and take part in the foundation stone–laying ceremony of a major fertiliser project in Dibrugarh district.

In a post on X, PM Modi said he would begin his visit by paying tributes at Swahid Smarak Kshetra to the martyrs who laid down their lives during the Assam Movement, describing their sacrifice as a defining chapter in the state’s history.

He further added that the visit would be an occasion to honour their courage and commitment in protecting Assam’s identity and rights.

Official Schedule and Historical Significance

According to the official schedule, Prime Minister Modi will, on Sunday at around 9:45 AM, visit Swahid Smarak Kshetra at Boragaon in Guwahati to pay homage to the martyrs of the six-year-long people’s movement that symbolised the collective resolve for a foreigner-free Assam and the protection of the state’s identity.

The Assam Movement remains one of the most significant mass movements in the state’s history, and the tribute is likely to underline the Centre’s recognition of the sacrifices made during that period.

After the homage ceremony, the Prime Minister will travel to Namrup in Dibrugarh district, where he will perform the Bhoomi Pujan of the Ammonia-Urea Fertiliser Project of Assam Valley Fertiliser and Chemical Company Limited.

Terming it an important project, PM Modi said it would help meet the fertiliser requirements of Assam and several other states. He added that the project would reduce India’s dependence on fertiliser imports and strengthen self-reliance in line with the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.

The brownfield project will come up within the existing premises of Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Limited (BVFCL) and involves an estimated investment of over Rs 10,600 crore. It is expected to support farmer welfare, generate employment and accelerate regional economic development.

Guwahati Visit and Airport Terminal Inauguration

On Saturday, at around 3 PM, the Prime Minister will arrive in Guwahati, where he will undertake a walkthrough and inaugurate the new terminal building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport. He will also address a public gathering on the occasion.

The inauguration of the new terminal marks a major milestone in Assam’s connectivity, economic expansion and global engagement, reinforcing Guwahati’s role as a key gateway to the Northeast.

Overall, the Prime Minister’s visit combines tributes to Assam’s historic struggle with the launch of infrastructure and industrial projects aimed at strengthening connectivity, farmer welfare and long-term economic growth.
