Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Aizawl on Saturday to inaugurate the long-awaited 51.38-kilometre Bairabi-Sairang railway line, connecting Mizoram’s capital by rail for the first time. This milestone makes Aizawl the fourth Northeast state capital, after Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar, to gain rail connectivity.
The project, costing over ₹8,000 crore, involved challenging engineering feats, including 45 tunnels and 55 major bridges, highlighting the scale of infrastructure development in the region.
Alongside the railway inauguration, the Prime Minister will flag off three new trains, enhancing Mizoram’s links to major Indian cities.
These include the weekly Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express to Delhi, the tri-weekly Kolkata-Sairang Express, and the daily Guwahati-Sairang Express. A goods train service is also set to commence shortly.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised that these new services will improve access to healthcare, education, and markets while boosting employment and tourism across Mizoram.
The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stones for vital road projects, including the 45 km Aizawl Bypass Road, Thenzawl-Sialsuk Road, and Khankawn-Rongura Road.
These roads aim to decongest Aizawl and improve connectivity between key districts and markets, especially aiding agricultural communities.
Authorities will inaugurate the all-weather Chhimtuipui River Bridge to reduce travel time by two hours and facilitate cross-border trade under the Kaladan Multimodal Transit framework.
Officials will launch a new LPG bottling plant in Aizawl to ensure a steady supply and create local jobs.
Furthering social development, PM Modi will inaugurate a residential school at Kawrthah, providing modern classrooms, hostels, and sports infrastructure, including an artificial football turf, benefiting over 10,000 students.
Officials will also inaugurate the Eklavya Model Residential School at Tlangnuam to improve tribal education and reduce dropout rates. Meanwhile, a multipurpose indoor sports hall in Tuikual will nurture young athletes for national and international events.
This comprehensive development drive marks a significant boost to Mizoram’s infrastructure, economy, and social progress, signalling a new chapter in the state’s growth and integration with the rest of India.
