Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Koderma–Vaishali MEMU passenger train on Friday via video conferencing from Gaya Junction, marking a significant step towards better regional connectivity and tourism growth.
The new service will link Koderma with key destinations such as Nawada, Nalanda, Rajgir, Bodh Gaya, and Vaishali, thereby enhancing access to the Buddhist Circuit.
It will likely serve students, workers, and patients by improving mobility between Bihar and Jharkhand.
According to Additional Divisional Railway Manager (DDU Division) Dilip Kumar, the MEMU will function as a fast commuter option for major Buddhist sites.
The route will pass through Vaishali, Nalanda, Rajgir, and Gaya, placing historic and spiritual centres on a direct rail network.
Built for short-to-medium distance travel, the MEMU promises efficiency and comfort.
Railway officials said it will particularly benefit smaller towns in the North Chotanagpur and Magadh regions, integrating them more closely into the state’s railway map.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Rajeev Ranjan noted that the project aligns with the Amrit Bharat Express initiative aimed at modernising passenger services.
He explained that the train design includes interconnected coaches, allowing passengers to move easily across compartments.
The new service is likely to increase reliability and frequency for local commuters while also boosting the Buddhist tourism corridor, making it more accessible to both domestic and international visitors.
The inauguration forms part of the Prime Minister’s broader Bihar visit, during which he will lay foundation stones and launch projects worth nearly Rs 13,000 crore, spanning railways, roads, housing, health, and sanitation.
By directly connecting Jharkhand’s Koderma with Bihar’s cultural, spiritual, and educational hubs, the MEMU project is being hailed as an important step in advancing regional development.
