During his visit to Mumbai on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate and lay the foundation for a series of significant projects valued at Rs 29,000 crore.
This initiative comes as part of the Mahayuti’s strategy for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections scheduled for September-October, aiming to promote its development agenda in opposition to the Maha Vikas Aghadi.
This visit marks PM Modi’s first to Maharashtra since the Lok Sabha elections, although he has previously attended five events dedicated to various infrastructure and welfare projects across the country.
Among the projects worth ₹29,000 crore, the Prime Minister will officiate the groundbreaking ceremony for the highly anticipated Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project, which is likely to cost ₹16,600 crore.
This project has been in discussions for years and is likely to significantly reduce travel time, allowing commuters to journey between Thane and Borivali in just 12 minutes, a saving of over an hour.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will oversee this project, which is likely to benefit one lakh commuters daily and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 150,000 metric tonnes annually.
Additionally, PM Modi will initiate the twin tunnels under the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, a project costing ₹6,300 crore.
This development aims to decrease travel time from 75 minutes to just 20 minutes while cutting carbon emissions by 23,000 metric tonnes each year and saving fuel.
Another significant initiative is the launch of the Mukhyamantri Yuva Karya Prashikshan Yojana, a youth training scheme costing ₹5,540 crore.
Announced by Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar during the Maharashtra Assembly’s budget presentation on June 28, this scheme aims to provide employment opportunities for youth aged 18 to 35.
The government anticipates that around 10 lakh youths will benefit annually, with internships lasting six months and stipends ranging from ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 for participants.
PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the Kalyan Yard Remodelling Project, which has a budget of ₹813 crore.
This project aims to separate long-distance and suburban traffic while enhancing the efficiency of the goods yard.
Furthermore, he will dedicate extended platforms 10 and 11 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, valued at ₹52 crore, which will accommodate 24-coach trains, facilitating better passenger flow and reducing crowding.
The Prime Minister will also inaugurate a new platform at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, costing ₹64 crore, to improve station capacity and handle increased traffic.
Additionally, the foundation stone for the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal in Turbhe, with an investment of ₹27 crore, will be laid, promising new job opportunities and increased revenue from goods transportation.
These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to infrastructure development and employment generation in the state ahead of the crucial elections.
