Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a crucial Union Cabinet meeting today at 11 AM in the national capital. The gathering comes at a time of heightened trade tensions between India and the United States.
The Cabinet meeting follows a significant escalation in US tariffs on Indian exports.
During the previous session on August 8, also chaired by PM Modi, ministers deliberated on Washington’s decision to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff, raising the total duties on Indian goods to 50 per cent.
The US administration, under President Donald Trump, cited India’s continued import of Russian crude oil as the reason behind the latest hike. The punitive measures have sparked concern within India’s trade and export sectors.
Sources indicate today’s meeting will primarily assess the economic fallout of these actions and explore policy measures to counteract their impact.
With the Cabinet expected to discuss ways to safeguard national interests, attention will be on potential diplomatic outreach and trade realignment.
Analysts believe India may consider diversifying export markets and accelerating bilateral trade negotiations with other global partners.
The urgency of today’s meeting underlines the PM Modi government’s intent. It aims to send a strong message of economic resilience and strategic preparedness.
Just a day prior, PM Modi returned from a two-day visit to Gujarat, where he inaugurated Suzuki’s first global strategic Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the ‘Made in India’ e-Vitara.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Japanese Ambassador Keiichi Ono attended the launch event. Describing it as a ‘special day’ for India’s journey towards self-reliance, PM Modi also announced that hybrid battery electrode production would soon begin in the state.
Suzuki will export the e-Vitara models to over 100 countries, including Japan and key European markets. This move marks a significant leap in India’s EV manufacturing capabilities.
As the Cabinet meets today, India finds itself at a critical juncture. The nation is balancing its global energy ties with its economic priorities and green ambitions.
