Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in West Bengal’s Malda district later on Saturday. He will likely take part in three separate programmes, including two administrative events and a political rally.
The visit to the minority-dominated district is being seen as significant from both governance and electoral perspectives.
The political rally, slated as the final engagement of the day, is expected to draw considerable attention.
The Prime Minister is likely to use the platform to mount a strong critique of the West Bengal government. He is also expected to target the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). This approach has already been indicated by him through recent social media posts in Bengali.
In his message, PM Modi said he was looking forward to meeting the people of Malda. He added that he was eager to engage with residents of the surrounding areas at the BJP rally.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “I look forward to being among the people of Malda and neighbouring areas during the BJP rally tomorrow. Every passing day, some or the other instance of TMC misrule comes to the fore. West Bengal is fed up with TMC and is all set to reject them. People want a development-oriented BJP government.”
In another post, PM Modi said, “I will be in West Bengal tomorrow, 17th January. At a programme in Malda, development works worth over Rs. 3250 crore would be inaugurated or their foundation stones would be laid. I am delighted that at the programme tomorrow, the first ever Vande Bharat sleeper train between Howrah and Guwahati will be flagged off.”
The Prime Minister also revealed that the occasion would mark the launch of the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train service connecting Howrah and Guwahati. He expressed enthusiasm about the milestone, highlighting its significance in India’s rail modernisation efforts.
“We are committed to improving the rail infrastructure in West Bengal and thus, during tomorrow’s programme, the foundation stone would be laid for major works such as the new rail line between Balurghat and Hili, next-generation freight maintenance facilities at New Jalpaiguri, upgradation of the Siliguri Loco Shed and modernization of Vande Bharat train maintenance facilities in Jalpaiguri. 4 new Amrit Bharat trains would also be flagged off,” PM Modi mentioned in his another post on X.
On Sunday, the Prime Minister will continue his West Bengal tour with similar official engagements in Singur. The town, located in Hooghly district, will also host his political programmes.
