Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday appealed for widespread support for the proposed reservation for women in legislative bodies. He described it as a key step towards building a developed India by 2047.
In a video message shared on Instagram, PM Modi emphasised that increasing women’s participation in law-making institutions would strengthen democracy. He added that it would accelerate national progress.
“Reservation for women in legislative bodies is the need of the hour! This will make our democracy even more vibrant and participative. Any delay in bringing this reservation will be deeply unfortunate. Expressed my thoughts on the issue in an article,” the Prime Minister stated.
Addressing women across the country, PM Modi highlighted the importance of what he described as ‘Nari Shakti’ in shaping India’s future.
Drawing on his years in public life, the Prime Minister said that the country’s development goals cannot be achieved without fully involving women in governance and decision-making.
Referring to earlier legislative efforts, the Prime Minister noted that the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam passed with broad political support. He said there is a shared expectation of ensuring one-third representation for women in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
PM Modi also indicated that discussions with various political parties in recent days have yielded encouraging responses, suggesting a growing consensus on the issue.
PM Modi urged citizens to read his detailed article on the subject. He also asked them to circulate it widely.
The Prime Minister encouraged people to urge political leaders to back the proposed legislation during the Parliament session scheduled for April 16 to 18. He called for a collective effort to secure its passage and expressed optimism that parties would come together in support.
Reiterating the significance of the move, the Prime Minister described women’s reservation as a necessary reform to make India’s democratic system more inclusive and representative. He also cautioned that further delay would hinder progress towards balanced participation in governance.
The push for the legislation follows the Union Cabinet’s approval of a draft amendment. The amendment aims to implement the reservation provisions in time for the 2029 general elections.
