Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid heartfelt tributes to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa during the 131st episode of Mann Ki Baat, describing her as a widely admired and beloved leader.
Recalling her legacy, he said she embodied a deep spirit of patriotism and set a powerful example of women’s leadership in Indian politics.
He said, “Jayalalithaa was a great leader who deeply loved the people, and they loved her in return. I hold my friendship with her like a sacred tree in my heart.”
The Prime Minister praised her decisive governance, saying she upheld law and order in Tamil Nadu and became a symbol of women’s empowerment.
He added that even today, especially around her 24 February birth anniversary, he sees the deep affection people continue to hold for her in Tamil Nadu.
He recalled their meetings during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, stating that their discussions often revolved around good governance.
PM Modi remembered her clarity of thought and her gracious gesture of inviting him to Chennai for Pongal celebrations, calling it unforgettable.
He also noted that she attended his swearing-in ceremonies in Gujarat in 2002 and 2012 and extended steadfast support to the state during his tenure.
The tribute comes at a time when Tamil Nadu is preparing for Assembly elections. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), founded by M G Ramachandran, remains a key political force in the state.
Fondly known as ‘Amma’, Jayalalithaa continues to share a strong emotional bond with her supporters years after her passing.
The Prime Minister said the nation would always remember her devotion and commitment to progress.
