PM Modi Reaffirms Maldives’ Key Role In India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ & SAGAR Vision

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the strategic importance of Maldives in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision on Monday, emphasizing a strengthened partnership between the two nations in economic and maritime security.

Speaking after bilateral talks with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu at Hyderabad House, PM Modi underscored the deep-rooted ties between the two countries and outlined key areas of cooperation moving forward.

The leaders agreed to explore a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and to initiate the process of settling trade transactions in local currencies, a significant step to enhance economic cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted that India has consistently played a pivotal role in supporting Maldives, particularly during crises, and remains committed to its neighbor’s development.

PM Modi stated, “India has always played the role of ‘First Responder’ for Maldives. Be it meeting the needs of essential commodities for the people of Maldives, providing drinking water during a natural disaster, or providing vaccines during Covid, India has always fulfilled its responsibility as a neighbour.”

Acknowledging the historic bonds between the two nations, PM Modi noted that India remains Maldives’ closest ally and friend. He further announced the adoption of a comprehensive vision for economic and maritime security, aimed at giving strategic direction to future collaborations.

Key Agreements Signed On Trade, Energy, Defense, & Infrastructure

Several important agreements were signed during the discussions, including cooperation in areas such as trade, energy, defense, and infrastructure.

The Prime Minister pointed to the inauguration of the redeveloped Hanimaadhoo International Airport as a major milestone in the partnership, which will facilitate greater connectivity between the two nations.

He also revealed that the Greater Male Connectivity Project, one of the largest infrastructure projects in the region, will be fast-tracked.

Additionally, PM Modi announced India’s support for the development of a new commercial port in Thilafushi and the introduction of the RuPay Card in Maldives, enhancing financial linkages between the two countries.

A significant milestone was the handover of 700 social housing units built with Indian assistance, a testament to India’s long-term development cooperation with Maldives.

On the defense front, India will refit the Maldives Coast Guard Ship Huravee, a move that aligns with their shared vision of maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.

Earlier, President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, complete with a 21-gun salute.

The Maldivian leader also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.

During his official five-day visit to India, Muizzu is likely to engage with top Indian officials, including President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, to further bolster ties.

His visit also includes stops in Agra, Mumbai, and Bengaluru for business engagements aimed at expanding economic cooperation between the two nations.

PM Modi concluded by expressing optimism for the future of India-Maldives relations, stating that both countries are working together to build a brighter, more prosperous future for their people.
