In a recent engagement with farmers at the India Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR) in the national capital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing agricultural welfare with a renewed focus on rapid and innovative development.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi emphasized his intent to work at triple the speed during his third term to advance the interests of farmers.
He cited recent government initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable farming and climate-resilient practices designed to improve farmers’ incomes.
During the meeting, PM Modi released 109 new high-yielding and climate-resilient crop varieties, including 34 field crops and 27 horticultural crops.
He expressed enthusiasm about these advancements, highlighting their potential to revolutionize farming practices and support farmers’ livelihoods.
The Prime Minister referenced the historical slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ introduced by Lal Bahadur Shastri and the addition of ‘Jai Vigyan’ by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
He announced that he has now included ‘Jai Anusandhan’ to emphasize the critical role of research and innovation in agriculture.
PM Modi praised the farmers’ voluntary shift towards natural farming practices and noted their positive outcomes.
He encouraged farmers to experiment with the new crop varieties on a small scale or at specific points on their land before widespread adoption.
Farmers expressed their optimism about the new varieties, citing their potential to lower costs and positively impact the environment.
Scientists confirmed that these developments align with the Prime Minister’s vision of integrating underutilized crops into mainstream agriculture.
The role of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in raising awareness about these new varieties was also highlighted, with the PM urging them to actively inform farmers about the benefits of these innovations.
In a show of dedication, PM Modi chose to continue the interaction with farmers despite heavy rain.
He declined the use of an umbrella offered by security personnel, instead choosing to hold it himself and even offered to share it with farmers, demonstrating his commitment to their well-being.
The event underscored the government’s ongoing efforts to support and advance the agricultural sector through innovative practices and direct engagement with the farming community.
