PM Modi, President Macron Discuss West Asia In Call; Stress Strait Of Hormuz Security

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Both leaders reviewed the situation in West Asia. They agreed that there is an urgent need to ensure safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The leaders reaffirmed the importance of maintaining stability in the region and ensuring uninterrupted maritime routes that are vital for global trade.

This conversation followed an earlier discussion between the two leaders on March 19, when they stressed the importance of de-escalation and returning to dialogue and diplomacy in West Asia.

After the latest call, PM Modi posted on X, “Received a phone call from my dear friend President Emmanuel Macron. We discussed the situation in West Asia and agreed on the need to urgently restore safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. We will continue our close cooperation to advance peace and stability in the region and beyond.”

The interaction builds on recent engagements between India and France.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met President Macron during his visit to Paris last month.

In February, President Macron travelled to India, where both leaders worked towards strengthening the strategic partnership. They also launched the India-France Year of Innovation 2026 and attended the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Donald Trump. During the call, they reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across several sectors.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and discussed the situation in West Asia. They also highlighted the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Received a call from my friend President Donald Trump. We reviewed the substantial progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation in various sectors.”

The post further read, “We are committed to further strengthening our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership in all areas. We also discussed the situation in West Asia and stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.”

The renewed focus on maritime safety highlights the critical role of the Strait of Hormuz in global energy supply and economic stability.
