PM Modi Praises Sashastra Seema Bal’s Service And Sacrifice On 62nd Raising Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his heartfelt greetings to the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on Saturday as the force marked its 62nd Raising Day, applauding its steadfast commitment to safeguarding the nation.

He emphasised that the SSB’s strong sense of responsibility forms a vital foundation of India’s security framework.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “On the Raising Day of the Sashastra Seema Bal, I extend my greetings to all personnel associated with this force. SSB’s unwavering dedication reflects the highest traditions of service. Their sense of duty remains a strong pillar of our nation’s safety. From challenging terrains to demanding operational conditions, the SSB stands ever vigilant. Wishing them the very best in their endeavours ahead.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the personnel and their families, recognising their crucial role in protecting national borders and supporting citizens during emergencies.

“Greetings to SSB personnel and their families on Raising Day. From safeguarding our frontiers to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with citizens in times of crisis, the @SSB_INDIA has always made the nation proud. Salutations to martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” Shah posted.

Origin and Evolution of the SSB

The Raising Day marks the formation of the force in 1963, following the Sino-Indian War.

The organisation was originally established as the Special Service Bureau and operated under the Ministry of External Affairs before being transferred to the Cabinet Secretariat.

At its inception, the force motivated and mobilised border communities to strengthen national security during both peace and wartime.

Based on the Kargil Review Committee’s recommendations, the force was shifted to the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2001 and assigned the role of a border guarding force.

Subsequently, in March 2004, the government formally renamed it the Sashastra Seema Bal.

At present, the SSB is responsible for securing India’s open and friendly borders with Nepal(1,751 m) and Bhutan(699 m).

Its duties now include curbing cross-border crimes such as smuggling and human trafficking, ensuring internal security, and carrying out anti-Naxal operations in selected areas.
