PM Modi Praises Major Abhilasha Barak For Prestigious UN Honour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Major Abhilasha Barak after the United Nations named her Military Gender Advocate of the Year.

Sharing his message on X, PM Modi praised her dedication and acknowledged the significance of the international honour.

The Prime Minister noted that Major Barak currently serves as an Engagement Team Commander and Gender Focal Point with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), where she has played an important role in peacekeeping operations.

PM Modi stated that the award celebrates Major Barak’s distinguished service while also reflecting India’s longstanding commitment to United Nations peacekeeping missions across the world. He added that her accomplishment serves as a powerful example for young Indians, particularly girls and young women who aspire to contribute to society and public service.

Major Abhilasha Barak, who became India’s first woman combat helicopter pilot, received the honour for promoting women’s participation and representation in peacekeeping activities.

While accepting the award, Major Abhilasha Barak said that ambition, leadership and courage are not limited by gender. She also stressed that inclusive participation remains essential for achieving lasting peace.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres presented the award to Major Barak. He described her as an inspiring figure for the communities she supports.

Guterres also praised her influence on the personnel serving alongside her.

Assistant Secretary-General Lisa Buttenheim credited her leadership and innovative approach with advancing the women, peace and security agenda within military operations.

UN officials highlighted Major Barak’s efforts to strengthen relationships with local communities and establish early-warning networks that enhance civilian protection.

Major Abhilasha Barak has also led initiatives benefiting thousands of women and girls. These initiatives include educational, healthcare and vocational training programmes. They have helped improve opportunities in challenging environments.

With this achievement, Major Barak becomes the third Indian woman officer to receive the Military Gender Advocate Award. Major Suman Gawani and Major Radhika Sen were the previous recipients. The recognition reinforces India’s strong contribution to global peacekeeping missions.
