PM Modi Pays Tribute To Shibu Soren At Sir Ganga Ram Hospital; Expresses Condolences To His Family

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay homage to veteran tribal leader and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, who had been receiving treatment for over a month.

PM Modi met with Soren’s son and current Chief Minister Hemant Soren and other family members to personally express his support during their time of grief.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Went to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay homage to Shri Shibu Soren Ji. Also met his family. My thoughts are with Hemant Ji, Kalpana Ji and the admirers of Shri Shibu Soren Ji.”

He had earlier conveyed his condolences, describing Soren as a ‘grassroots leader’ with unwavering dedication to tribal communities, the poor and the downtrodden.

At 81, Shibu Soren passed away after a prolonged battle with kidney-related health issues and a stroke. He had been placed on life support in late June.

Born in Nemra village in 1944, Soren co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 1972, later becoming a central figure in the movement for Jharkhand statehood.

He served as chief minister thrice—in 2005, 2008–09, and 2009–10—and represented the Dumka constituency in Lok Sabha eight times.

At the time of his death, he was a sitting Rajya Sabha member.

A Moment of National Mourning

The hospital visit was covered widely, with footage capturing PM Modi offering floral tributes and paying his respects.

The solemn gesture underscored the nation’s grief at the loss of a stalwart leader.

Expressing sorrow over the news, CM Hemant Soren wrote in Hindi on X, “Respected Guru Dishom has left us all. Today, I have become empty…”

PM Modi had previously mourned Soren’s death, posting, “Shri Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who rose through the ranks of public life with unwavering dedication to the people. He was particularly passionate about empowering tribal communities, the poor and downtrodden. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Spoke to Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji and expressed condolences. Om Shanti.”

The passing of Shibu Soren marks the end of an era for Jharkhand politics and tribal leadership.

His role in the state’s creation and decades of service to the tribal cause have left an indelible impact. His legacy survives in the policies and identity he helped build for the state.
