PM Modi Pays Tribute To Saratchandra Chattopadhyay On His 150th Birth Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to celebrated Bengali novelist Saratchandra Chattopadhyay on his 150th birth anniversary, remembering the writer’s lasting contribution to Indian literature.

In his message, PM Modi highlighted Chattopadhyay’s vivid portrayal of 19th-century rural Bengali society. His writings captured social realities with remarkable precision. They portrayed the customs, struggles and changing aspirations that shaped communities during the period.

Prime Minister Modi noted that Chattopadhyay’s literary influence extends well beyond Bengal.

Readers across India have embraced his works through translations into several Indian languages. His writings have reached audiences in foreign languages as well, giving his stories a wider cultural footprint.

The Prime Minister underlined Chattopadhyay’s strong commitment to social reform, women’s rights and nationalism. His literary works did more than tell compelling stories. They examined social inequalities and questioned practices that restricted individual freedom and dignity.

Chattopadhyay’s literature consequently remains an important window into India’s social history. His characters and narratives continue to connect with readers because they address human emotions and societal challenges that remain relevant.

PM Modi urged more young people to discover Chattopadhyay’s writings. He stressed that the novelist’s ideas and literary legacy continue to hold value in contemporary times.

The tribute places renewed attention on one of Bengal’s most influential literary figures.

Chattopadhyay’s ability to combine storytelling with social observation has helped preserve a significant chapter of India’s cultural and social evolution. His works continue to invite new generations to explore literature not merely as entertainment, but as a means of understanding society and its transformation.
