On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the legacy of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, on the occasion of his 135th birth anniversary.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “On the occasion of his birth anniversary, I pay homage to our former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.”
Born on 14 November 1889, in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh, Jawaharlal Nehru received his education at prestigious institutions such as Harrow School in London and the University of Cambridge.
The official PM India portal states, “In 1912, he attended the Bankipore Congress as a delegate and became Secretary of the Home Rule League in Allahabad in 1919.”
“In 1916, he met Mahatma Gandhi for the first time, which left a lasting impact on him. He led the first Kisan March in Pratapgarh District, Uttar Pradesh, in 1920, and was twice imprisoned for his involvement in the Non-Cooperation Movement of 1920-22,” the portal added.
India commemorates Pandit Nehru’s birth anniversary as Children’s Day, celebrating his deep affection for young people.
Revered as ‘Chacha Nehru’ for his love and concern for children, he was a staunch advocate for their welfare and education.
Following his death in 1964, the government dedicated 14 November as Children’s Day to honor Jawaharlal Nehru’s enduring legacy.
The inaugural celebration took place in 1965, launching an annual tradition aimed at advocating for children’s rights and highlighting their role in shaping India’s future.
This day has since become a vital symbol of the nation’s dedication to its youth.
Across India, schools and organizations host cultural programs, competitions, and awareness campaigns focused on children’s welfare, education, and rights.
