PM Modi Pays Tribute To Educationist, Former Governor DY Patil

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed grief over the death of renowned educationist and former Governor Dnyandeo Yashwantrao (DY) Patil, remembering his lifelong contribution to education and philanthropy.

In a post on X, PM Modi said DY Patil remained at the forefront of serving society through philanthropy and education. He said Patil consistently worked to improve the lives of others, particularly the poor, and expressed condolences to his family and admirers.

“Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister added.

DY Patil died in Kolhapur after a prolonged illness. He was 90.

Born on October 22, 1935, in Ambap, Kolhapur, Patil began his political career with the Congress and served as a Maharashtra legislator during the late 1960s and the 1970s. He later held gubernatorial positions in Bihar, Tripura and West Bengal before stepping away from active politics to focus on education and social development.

Patil established a vast network of schools, colleges, universities and hospitals across Maharashtra and other states, significantly expanding access to professional education and healthcare.

The Government honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1991 for his contribution to society.

A large number of mourners gathered at his residence in Kasaba Bawada, Kolhapur, to pay their final respects.

Political leaders, educationists, social workers and members of the public visited the residence to offer tributes.

Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi also condoled Patil’s death, describing the news as heartbreaking. He said the former Governor’s contribution to education and public service would always be remembered and extended his condolences to Patil’s family, supporters and well-wishers.
