PM Modi Meets Para Asian Games Athletes; Receives Special Mementoes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with India’s Para Asian Games 2026 contingent at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex on Thursday. Athletes presented him with special mementoes to mark their achievements at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.

Sprinter Simran Sharma, who won gold in the women’s 100m and 200m T12 events, gifted a pair of shoes to the Prime Minister. Shot putter Sachin Sarjerao, who clinched gold in the F45/46 category, presented him with a shot put ball.

Athletes, coaches, support staff and officials from the Indian Olympic Association, national sports federations and the Sports Ministry attended the interaction.

India recorded its best-ever performance at the Games in Japan. A contingent of 97 para-athletes won 114 medals, including 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze. This surpassed India’s previous record of 108 medals at the 2023 Hangzhou edition.

Para-athletics led India’s medal tally with 65 medals, including 22 gold. Para-badminton contributed 16 medals, while para-swimming secured 11. India also won six medals in para-archery and five in shooting.

Javelin thrower Sumit Antil defended his gold medal and helped secure a podium sweep in his category. Shooter Mona Agarwal won gold in the women’s 50m rifle three positions SH1 event with record scores. India also secured two shooting quotas for the 2028 Paralympics.

Fifty-year-old Jehan Dorab Madan became India’s oldest medallist at the Games after winning bronze in para-table tennis.

The record medal haul highlighted India’s growing strength across para-sports and its progress in international competitions.
