PM Modi Meets Fijian PM Rabuka To Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka at Hyderabad House on Monday to discuss ways to further deepen the long-standing partnership between India and Fiji.

The leaders explored measures to enhance cooperation across political, economic, and cultural spheres.

Later in the day, taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Earlier today, held productive discussions with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of Fiji. India’s ties with Fiji are time-tested and are growing significantly. Our talks focussed on how to add more vigour to our developmental partnership. We discussed ways to deepen ties in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, defence, security and technology. Cultural linkages between India and Fiji are an important pillar of our relations and we will also work to deepen these ties.”

“Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and I also talked about how areas like sports and education can bring our nations even closer. We are also going to work together on renewable energy and climate change,” PM Modi further added.

PM Rabuka arrived in New Delhi on Sunday, marking his first official visit to India in his current role. He is accompanied by his spouse, Sulueti Rabuka, and a high-level delegation that includes Health and Medical Services Minister Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu and other senior officials.

As part of his visit, PM Modi will host a lunch in Rabuka’s honour.

Earlier on Monday, the Fijian Prime Minister paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, underscoring his respect for India’s heritage.

Rabuka will deliver a lecture titled ‘Ocean of Peace’ at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) in New Delhi.

The visit follows the 6th round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) held in Suva, Fiji, in July 2025.

The consultations provided a platform for both nations to review and expand cooperation in:

  • Health,
  • Education,
  • Capacity building,
  • Trade and investment,
  • Agriculture,
  • Renewable energy,
  • Climate change, and
  • Cultural exchanges

The Indian delegation at the FOC was led by Neena Malhotra, Secretary (South), Ministry of External Affairs, while Raijeli Taga, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, represented Fiji.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties and maintaining regular high-level political engagement. The next round of FOC will take place in New Delhi in 2026.

The MEA highlighted that Rabuka’s visit ‘underscores the long-standing and enduring ties between India and Fiji. It reaffirms the continued commitment of both countries to further strengthen the bilateral relationship across all sectors and deepen our close people-to-people ties’.

The visit comes soon after President Droupadi Murmu’s trip to Fiji in August 2024. During that visit, she addressed the Fijian Parliament and highlighted the nations’ close ties and shared values.

PM Rabuka is also scheduled to call on President Murmu during his stay in New Delhi.
