Born on April 5, 1908, Babu Jagjivan Ram emerged as a leading Dalit leader and freedom fighter, with his birth anniversary observed as Samata Diwas in parts of India.
Amit Shah paid tribute, calling him a pioneer of social justice who dedicated his life to national service and the upliftment of weaker sections.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda remembered him as a visionary leader and skilled administrator who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the poor, Dalits, and marginalised communities, calling his efforts a lasting source of inspiration.
Similarly, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid tribute, stating that social justice and national defence remained central to Jagjivan Ram’s life.
He emphasised that his contributions to the country’s development and security continue to be deeply valued.
A strong advocate of equality, Babu Jagjivan Ram worked to end untouchability and co-founded the All India Depressed Classes League in 1935.
He led anti-discrimination movements at Banaras Hindu University and University of Calcutta, and later organised rural labour initiatives after joining the Bihar Assembly in 1937.
As a Constituent Assembly member, he also helped secure reservations for SCs and STs, leaving a lasting legacy of justice and equality.
