PM Modi Lays Foundation Stones In Churachandpur; Reaffirms Commitment To Manipur’s Development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Churachandpur, Manipur, on Saturday to lay the foundation stone for several major development projects. The visit, part of his two-day tour of the Northeast, underscores the Centre’s commitment to rebuilding trust and accelerating growth in Manipur.

Churachandpur, a district largely inhabited by the Kuki community, welcomed the Prime Minister amid steady rainfall and emotional scenes of unity.

PM Modi’s visit is his first to the state since the ethnic clashes that broke out in May 2023.

Laying the Foundation for Growth

The Prime Minister launched multiple development projects valued at over ₹7,300 crore. These include:

  • The Manipur Urban Roads, Drainage and Asset Management Improvement Project is worth ₹3,600 crore
  • Five National Highway projects worth over ₹2,500 crore
  • The Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project
  • Working Women’s Hostels at nine locations across the state

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said, “Manipur is the land of courage and determination. These hills are a gift of nature and reflect the resilience of the people. I salute your spirit.”

Due to adverse weather, PM Modi travelled by road instead of a helicopter.

Recalling his journey, he shared, “The sight of youth and elderly citizens holding the Tricolour on the roadside moved me deeply. I will never forget this moment. I bow to the people of Manipur.”

Strengthening the Northeast

He reiterated the government’s commitment to the region, saying, “The name ‘Manipur’ itself contains ‘Mani’, symbolising a jewel that will enhance the brilliance of the Northeast.”

He emphasised that the newly launched projects would uplift tribal communities in the hills by improving access to education and healthcare.

Recognising the state’s strategic location, the Prime Minister focused on improving infrastructure and connectivity.

“Being a border state, connectivity has always been a challenge for Manipur. I understand the hardships caused by poor roads. Since 2014, we’ve prioritised fixing this.”

He noted that over the past few years, ₹3,700 crore has already been spent on National Highways in the state, while ongoing projects worth ₹8,700 crore are progressing rapidly.

PM Modi concluded by stating that the Centre will continue supporting Manipur’s development journey through inclusive, infrastructure-driven growth.

He congratulated the people and encouraged unity, resilience, and progress as key elements in building a stronger Manipur.
