PM Modi Lays Foundation Stone Of Rs 11,000 Crore Fertiliser Plant In Assam’s Namrup

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday delivered a decisive industrial push to the Northeast by laying the foundation stone of a massive ammonia-urea fertiliser plant at Namrup in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, backed by an investment of ₹11,000 crore.

The move marked a major political and economic statement, positioning Assam at the centre of India’s fertiliser and manufacturing revival.

Addressing a large public gathering, PM Modi said the modern fertiliser unit would create thousands of direct and indirect employment and self-employment opportunities, energising Assam’s economy and offering new pathways for youth in the region.

He described the project as a turning point for Namrup and Dibrugarh, calling it the fulfilment of a long-pending regional aspiration.

Assam Valley Fertiliser and Chemical Company Limited will develop the plant and produce over 12 lakh metric tonnes of fertiliser every year. The facility will significantly strengthen fertiliser availability in the region.

PM Modi said local production would ensure faster availability of urea to farmers in Assam and the wider Northeast, while sharply cutting transportation costs and logistical delays.

Calling the day ‘historic for Assam and the entire Northeast’, the Prime Minister said the foundation stone signalled the beginning of a new industrial chapter.

He underlined that Assam is no longer on the margins of development but is emerging as a growth engine powered by infrastructure, connectivity, and manufacturing.

Integrated Development Push Across Sectors

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the new terminal at Guwahati Airport and performed the bhoomi pujan at the Namrup site, reinforcing the narrative of integrated development.

He said Assam’s progress now spans multiple sectors, new industries, modern highways, semiconductor manufacturing, agriculture, tea gardens, tourism, and digital connectivity.

PM Modi drew a sharp contrast with previous governments, accusing them of allowing key fertiliser units at Namrup to shut down due to outdated machinery.

He said the closures damaged fertiliser supply across the Northeast, reducing crop yields and farmers’ incomes. The BJP-led governments, he asserted, are correcting those failures with long-term solutions.

Recalling past hardships, PM Modi said farmers once stood in endless queues for urea, police guarded fertiliser shops, and lathi charges became routine.

“That era is over,” he declared.

PM Modi pointed out that while fertiliser plants closed under earlier dispensations, the current government revived production by commissioning new units in Gorakhpur, Sindri, Barauni, and Ramagundam, while also encouraging private sector participation.

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s progress towards fertiliser self-reliance, noting that urea production rose from 225 lakh metric tonnes in 2014 to nearly 306 lakh metric tonnes today.

He said strong domestic production ensures food security, farmer confidence, and national resilience.

With the Namrup project, PM Modi signalled that Assam’s industrial future has arrived—and it will shape the Northeast’s role in a developed India.
