Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated three newly allocated Amrit Bharat Express trains and a passenger train service for Kerala, marking a significant step towards enhancing rail infrastructure and connectivity in the region.
Flagging off the services from Thiruvananthapuram, the Prime Minister underscored the government’s focus on modern, affordable, and inclusive rail travel for citizens across states.
The newly launched Amrit Bharat Express trains will operate on the Thiruvananthapuram–Tambaram, Nagercoil–Mangaluru, and Thiruvananthapuram–Charlapalli routes. In addition, officials also flagged off a new passenger train service between Thrissur and Guruvayur.
Soon after the ceremony, the trains departed from their respective stations, Thiruvananthapuram Central, Thiruvananthapuram North, and Thrissur, heading towards their destinations. All four services will be operated and maintained by Southern Railway.
The Thiruvananthapuram–Tambaram Amrit Bharat Express will connect Kerala’s capital with major industrial, educational, and healthcare hubs in Tamil Nadu, passing through key cities such as Tirunelveli, Madurai, and Tiruchchirappalli.
Meanwhile, the Thiruvananthapuram–Charlapalli service will offer a crucial rail link spanning Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The Nagercoil–Mangaluru Amrit Bharat Express will enhance connectivity along the western coastal corridor, linking Tamil Nadu and coastal Karnataka via Kerala.
The newly introduced Thrissur–Guruvayur passenger train will provide daily commuters, students, and pilgrims with direct and affordable access to the renowned temple town.
Passengers welcomed the new services, noting improved interiors, spacious general and sleeper coaches, and enhanced safety features.
The trains feature CCTV cameras in every coach, along with mobile charging points, bottle holders, and passenger information announcements, including route and next-stop details in sleeper coaches.
Designed to bridge the gap between conventional mail and express trains and premium services, the Amrit Bharat Express aims to deliver better comfort, safety, and accessibility at economical fares, reinforcing inclusive growth through modern rail travel.
