Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India is the only G20 country to have fulfilled all its commitments under the Paris COP21 Summit ahead of schedule, highlighting the country’s progress in renewable energy, clean mobility and environmental protection.
PM Modi made the remarks while inaugurating the international conference on ‘The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics’. He highlighted India’s climate initiatives and its efforts to combine traditional environmental values with modern development.
The Prime Minister said India’s progress in non-fossil fuel capacity, solar energy and carbon emission reduction has received positive attention globally.
He also highlighted initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, ‘One Sun, One World, One Grid’, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, Global Biofuels Alliance, International Big Cat Alliance and Mission LiFE.
PM Modi said India’s solar power capacity has risen from around 2 GW 12 years ago to more than 160 GW.
Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the government has installed rooftop solar panels in more than 50 lakh households and provided financial assistance of up to ₹80,000 per household. Under PM-KUSUM, the government has also provided solar pumps to 30 lakh farmers.
He said solar energy alone has helped India curb nearly 20 crore tonnes of carbon emissions. India has also expanded wind and hydropower capacity and is advancing nuclear energy generation.
PM Modi highlighted green hydrogen and clean mobility, including India’s first hydrogen train and rising EV sales. He cited FASTag and expanding Metro networks as cleaner transport measures.
He said 24,000 natural farming clusters cover nearly 12.5 lakh hectares, with nearly 3,000 climate-resilient crop varieties developed.
PM Modi also highlighted the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, which has seen crores of trees planted.
