PM Modi Inaugurates Purnea Airport; Launches Major Development Projects In Bihar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Purnea Airport, fulfilling a long-pending demand of the Seemanchal and Kosi regions. He also flagged off the first commercial flight, formally placing Purnea on India’s aviation map.

Airlines are expected to connect the region with cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, significantly improving mobility and economic opportunities for locals.

Launch of Development Projects

The Prime Minister launched and laid the foundation for projects totalling ₹36,000 crore, spanning sectors such as housing, power, water, and rail connectivity. These initiatives are expected to bring long-term benefits to eastern Bihar.

Highlights included:

  • Distribution of keys to 40,920 families under the PM Awas Yojana, with homes built at a cost of ₹603 crore.
  • Inauguration of the Araria–Galgalia–Thakurganj rail line, worth ₹4,410 crore.
  • Launch of the Jogbani–Danapur Vande Bharat Express and two Amrit Bharat trains: Jogbani–Erode and Saharsa–Amritsar.

  • Drinking water projects announced for Darbhanga, Katihar, and Bhagalpur.

Supporting Traditional Industries

In a major move to promote local livelihoods, PM Modi announced the formation of a National Makhana Board to support farmers engaged in makhana cultivation, a key traditional crop of the region.

Additionally, he inaugurated a Semen Bank facility in Purnea to support livestock development and rural incomes.

The Prime Minister received a warm welcome upon arrival, with traditional dances, cultural performances, and decorated welcome gates lining the streets of Purnea.

BJP leaders greeted him with a garland made of makhana, symbolising the region’s identity and pride.

The event witnessed the presence of key political leaders, including the Civil Aviation Minister, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and both Deputy Chief Ministers.

Speaking at the event, PM Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transforming Bihar through connectivity, housing, and empowerment of the poor.

He further emphasised that the state’s development is central to India’s growth, and that the NDA government is working tirelessly to bridge regional disparities and bring long-term prosperity to all.

The government expects the initiatives to create employment, improve basic services, and unlock new economic opportunities across Bihar.
