Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Pamban Bridge in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday, marking a significant advancement in India’s coastal and rail infrastructure.
The 2.07-kilometer-long vertical lift bridge spans the Palk Strait, connecting mainland India with Rameswaram Island, a prominent pilgrimage destination and key trade hub.
The launch event witnessed the presence of Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi.
As part of the ceremony, PM Modi flagged off the first train to traverse the bridge.
To highlight the bridge’s dual-use design, a carefully coordinated demonstration was conducted, an Indian Coast Guard boat smoothly passed under the elevated span, followed by a train crossing above, showcasing the bridge’s maritime clearance and rail capacity.
Adding to the day’s symbolism, Union Minister Vaishnaw hoisted the BJP flag at the site, celebrating the party’s foundation day with greetings extended to party workers nationwide.
Meanwhile, Governor RN Ravi visited the renowned Ramanathaswamy Temple, underscoring the bridge’s role in strengthening spiritual and cultural connections to Rameswaram.
To understand the bridge’s significance, it is essential to trace its origins.
British engineers constructed the original Pamban Bridge in 1914, designing it with a cantilever structure and a Scherzer rolling lift span.
For decades, it served as a lifeline for pilgrims and freight movement.
However, growing marine traffic, aging infrastructure, and rising logistical demands necessitated a future-ready replacement.
Approved in 2019, the new bridge has been built by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways.
Notably, the new structure stands three metres higher than its predecessor to accommodate larger maritime vessels.
Its standout features include a 72.5-metre vertical lift span and 88 steel girder spans, engineered for single-line rail operations.
More than just a functional asset, the bridge reflects India’s technological evolution in public infrastructure.
The Ministry of Railways compared its design and complexity to iconic global bridges such as the Golden Gate Bridge in the US, Tower Bridge in London, and the Oresund Bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden.
This alignment with international engineering benchmarks underscores India’s capacity for world-class innovation.
With this inauguration, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed his government’s broader vision, enhancing national connectivity, empowering regional economies, and creating robust infrastructure that serves both people and progress.
The New Pamban Bridge not only facilitates smoother travel and commerce but also exemplifies how modern engineering can honor historical legacy while advancing into the future.
