PM Modi Hosts Women’s World Cup Champions; Praises Their Remarkable Comeback

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today welcomed the victorious Women’s World Cup team at his residence on Lok Kalyan Marg, congratulating them for their historic win and remarkable comeback after facing initial defeats and online trolling.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur reminisced about meeting the Prime Minister in 2017, without the trophy, and expressed delight at now meeting him with the championship in hand.

Vice Captain Smriti Mandhana highlighted how the Prime Minister has inspired the team and noted that girls today are excelling across fields, attributing part of their motivation to his leadership.

All-rounder Deepti Sharma recalled her 2017 meeting with PM Modi, emphasising how his encouragement to keep working hard motivated them to achieve their dreams. She also discussed her Instagram post featuring Jai Shri Ram and her Hanuman tattoo, which she said gives her strength.

Memorable Moments from the Tournament

The Prime Minister and players discussed several iconic moments from the tournament.

Harmanpreet shared how she kept the match ball after the final, while PM Modi recalled Harleen Deol’s famous 2021 catch against England, which he had shared on social media.

Amanjot Kaur discussed her memorable catch after earlier fumbles, with PM emphasising focus during and after the play.

Kranti Gaud mentioned her brother’s admiration for the Prime Minister, prompting him to extend an open invitation to meet.

PM Modi urged the champions to advance the Fit India campaign, particularly motivating girls nationwide. He highlighted the growing challenge of obesity and encouraged the team to visit schools to inspire young students to stay active and pursue their ambitions.

The interaction reflected the Prime Minister’s support for women’s sports and his emphasis on dedication, resilience, and fitness, leaving the players inspired and reaffirming their commitment to promoting sporting and social messages across the country.
