Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid homage to former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Chaudhary Charan Singh on his birth anniversary, recognising his enduring contributions to nation-building, particularly in agriculture, rural development, and social justice.
Taking to the social media platform X, PM Modi shared a video message, stating, “Heartfelt tribute to former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh Ji on his birth anniversary. He dedicated his life to the welfare of the deprived sections of society as well as to the progress of agriculture and the prosperity of farmers. A grateful nation can never forget his contributions to nation-building.” The Prime Minister highlighted Charan Singh’s focus on small and marginal cultivators, noting that many policies today draw inspiration from his vision to empower rural India.
Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, also paid tribute, calling Charan Singh a ‘great farmer leader’ whose reforms in agriculture and social welfare continue to inspire.
Kavinder Gupta, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, extended greetings on Kisan Diwas, underscoring the former PM’s lifelong dedication to villages and farmers.
Born in 1902 in Noorpur, Uttar Pradesh, Chaudhary Charan Singh hailed from a middle-class peasant family.
Educated in science and law, he began his political career with the Indian National Congress before holding multiple legislative and ministerial positions in Uttar Pradesh.
Known for his integrity and administrative discipline, he championed land reforms, debt relief for rural farmers, and policies to ensure equitable distribution of land.
Charan Singh served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and later as India’s Prime Minister, earning respect for his pragmatism, eloquence, and commitment to social justice.
He authored influential works, including Abolition of Zamindari and India’s Poverty and Its Solution, which continue to shape agrarian discourse.
PM Modi emphasised that strengthening agriculture and empowering farmers remain central to building a self-reliant India. The ideals of Chaudhary Charan Singh continue to inspire policies supporting small-scale farming and inclusive growth.
