PM Modi Highlights Progress Towards Cleaner Streets, Better Housing, Faster Metros & Greener Cities In New India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently underscored the remarkable progress India has made in urban development, highlighting how government efforts are paving the way for cleaner streets, better housing, faster Metro services, and greener cities.

PM Modi’s comments followed an article by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who detailed the rapid transformation underway across India’s urban spaces.

Puri observed that Indian cities are evolving into engines of economic growth — modern yet humane, ambitious yet inclusive, global in outlook but firmly rooted in Indian values.

PM Modi echoed these sentiments, praising the comprehensive changes that are reshaping the urban experience.

For decades post-Independence, India’s urban spaces suffered neglect, with infrastructure and civic amenities lagging behind the needs of a growing population.

As Minister Puri outlined, central Delhi once displayed crumbling government buildings, potholed roads, and limited Metro connectivity, reflecting a lack of focus on urban development.

Prime Minister Modi shifted this paradigm by placing cities at the core of national development. Rather than viewing urban centres as burdens, he embraced them as engines of growth and pride.

Projects such as the Central Vista redevelopment have revitalised public spaces and created future-ready institutions, marking a new chapter in urban governance and infrastructure.

Unprecedented Investment and Impact

The scale of transformation is evident in the numbers. Between 2004 and 2014, central investment in urban infrastructure totalled around ₹1.57 lakh crore.

Since 2014, this figure has soared to nearly ₹28.5 lakh crore — a sixteenfold increase that has accelerated the pace of urban renewal across India.

India’s emergence as the world’s fourth-largest economy, combined with advances in digital infrastructure, has further fuelled urban growth.

Metro rail networks are a prime example of this progress. In 2014, India had roughly 248 kilometres of operational Metro across five cities. Today, the network exceeds 1,000 kilometres in over 23 cities, carrying over 10 million passengers daily.

New corridors are under construction in cities like Pune, Nagpur, Surat, and Agra, enhancing urban mobility while reducing pollution and commute times.

Urban transport has undergone a dramatic overhaul. The National Capital Region’s traffic congestion is being eased by the newly inaugurated Urban Extension Road II, which connects key highways and expressways.

The Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System is nearing full operation, reducing travel times significantly and providing a high-speed alternative for commuters.

These initiatives illustrate a new metropolitan vision for India’s cities — one focused on sustainability, connectivity, and inclusive growth.

PM Modi’s focus on cleaner streets, better housing, and greener cities reflects a comprehensive approach to urban development that balances growth with quality of life.
