PM Modi Highlights NEP 2020 Focus On Curiosity, Learning

PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday reaffirmed the significance of the National Education Policy 2020 in cultivating curiosity and comprehensive development among students. He urged citizens to read an article by Dharmendra Pradhan, which elaborates on the policy’s vision.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi stated that the first day of school symbolises both a fresh beginning and a collective national duty. He emphasised that NEP 2020 prioritises foundational literacy, joyful learning, and the overall growth of children.

Pradhan, in his article published in The Indian Express, highlighted that the policy places curiosity, understanding, and holistic progress at the core of education, moving away from rote learning. He described early schooling as a blend of excitement and discovery, where play, exploration, and engagement shape lifelong learning.

The Minister stressed integrating pre-school education into formal schooling to strengthen foundational skills before Grade I. He underscored a national commitment to literacy and numeracy, driven by initiatives such as NIPUN Bharat Mission, which aims for every child to achieve reading proficiency and basic arithmetic by Grade II.

Pradhan further emphasised that education must nurture the “whole child”, encompassing intellectual, physical, and emotional development. He highlighted the inclusion of arts, sports, nutrition, and physical activity, alongside measures like physical education mandates and awareness boards to address health concerns.

The Minister noted that technology supports learning but requires balance due to concerns over screen time and mental well-being.

Teachers, he added, remain central to reform implementation, promoting multilingual education and respect for mother tongues.

Pradhan concluded that education extends beyond classrooms, with families playing a crucial role.

The policy ultimately aims to build an inclusive, innovative system aligned with the vision of a developed India by 2047.
