The ITBP came into existence on October 24, 1962. It guards the 3,488-km India-China border, stretching from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh.
The force marked its 65th Raising Day by reaffirming its commitment to national service.
Most ITBP border outposts are situated at altitudes ranging from 9,000 feet to 18,800 feet, where personnel endure extreme winter conditions, with temperatures falling as low as minus 45 degrees Celsius, according to the Union Home Ministry.
The specialised armed police force trains its personnel in mountaineering, skiing and tactical operations. Beyond border security, it undertakes internal security duties and conducts operations against Left-Wing Extremism in Chhattisgarh.
The ITBP serves as a first responder during natural disasters across the Himalayan region. Its personnel have conducted hundreds of search, rescue and relief operations to assist people affected by calamities.
The force reiterated its motto, ‘Shaurya, Dridhta, Karmanishtha’ (Valour, Steadfastness, Dedication), on its Raising Day, reaffirming the Himveers’ commitment to safeguarding the nation and serving its people under challenging conditions.
