On India’s 79th Independence Day, PM Narendra Modi delivered a heartfelt tribute to farmers, calling them the backbone of Bharat’s transformation from colonial poverty to agricultural self-sufficiency.
Speaking from the Red Fort, PM Modi praised the tireless work of farmers who, in the decades after independence, filled India’s granaries and ensured food sovereignty for millions.
He said the nation’s economic growth is now directly benefiting farmers, livestock rearers, and fishermen.
The Prime Minister highlighted India’s top rankings in global agriculture, noting that the country leads the world in milk, pulses, and jute production, and ranks second in rice, wheat, cotton, fruits, and vegetables.
He pointed out that agricultural exports have crossed ₹4 lakh crore, showcasing India’s rising global influence in the farm sector.
PM Modi announced the launch of the PM Dhanya Dhanya Krishi Yojana, a programme aimed at uplifting 100 of the most backwards farming districts.
The initiative will address regional disparities in agricultural development and boost rural prosperity.
The Prime Minister said India will reclaim its rightful share of water to nourish its fields and communities.
This statement also signalled a strong stance on the Indus Water Treaty, which he described as unjust to Indian farmers.
PM Modi warned against dependence on imports for food security. He called for a robust domestic ecosystem to produce fertilisers and essential agricultural inputs, ensuring that farmers remain independent and the economy remains strong.
The Prime Minister credited schemes like PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, irrigation projects, and timely fertiliser supply. He said these measures have boosted farmer confidence and transformed the agricultural landscape.
These programmes, he said, have empowered small farmers, cattle rearers, and fishermen across India.
In a powerful closing statement, PM Modi declared:
“For farmers, fishermen, and livestock rearers, Modi will always stand as a wall of protection. India will not compromise on anything affecting the interests of farmers.”
This declaration reinforced the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the livelihoods of those who feed the nation.
