PM Modi Expresses Grief Over Lives Lost In Mansa Devi Stampede In Haridwar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his heartfelt condolences following a stampede at the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar that claimed six lives and injured several others.

The unfortunate incident occurred during the holy month of Shravan, a time when the pilgrimage site sees a sharp surge in devotees.

Describing the incident as ‘deeply saddening’, PM Modi offered prayers for the departed souls and wished a speedy recovery for those injured.

He also confirmed that the local administration is actively providing assistance to the affected families and overseeing ongoing rescue efforts.

Chief Minister’s Response

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also expressed grief, calling the news ‘extremely distressing’.

He reported that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and emergency services swiftly reached the site and are engaged in relief operations.

CM Dhami added that he is personally monitoring the situation and maintaining regular communication with officials on the ground.

To support the victims’ families, the Chief Minister announced an ex gratia amount of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

Officials have ordered a magisterial inquiry to identify the cause of the stampede and help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Eyewitnesses and early reports indicate that sudden panic in a crowded section of the temple route triggered the stampede.

A narrow pathway leading to the shrine reportedly became a bottleneck, with conflicting reports indicating that rumours of an electric current or snapped wire may have sparked the fear.

The confined space and sheer number of devotees contributed to the crush, causing chaos and injuries before authorities could intervene.

Safety and Crowd Control Concerns

The incident has renewed concerns about safety measures and crowd control at popular religious sites.

The Mansa Devi Temple, located on a hill and accessible via a ropeway or steep pathway, regularly witnesses heavy pilgrim traffic, especially during religious festivals and the month of Shravan.

Experts and local leaders have called for enhanced planning and infrastructure improvements to prevent such tragedies.

The tragedy at Haridwar’s Mansa Devi Temple has cast a shadow over the religious observances of thousands.

PM Modi’s message and CM Dhami’s swift response highlight the gravity of the incident.

As investigations proceed, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of pilgrims and preventing future occurrences through stricter safety protocols and better crowd management.
