PM Modi Expresses Condolences After Deadly Philippines Earthquake

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed grief over the loss of lives and destruction caused by a powerful earthquake that struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines.

In a post on X, PM Modi conveyed his condolences to Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, offering sympathies to the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured. He also reiterated India’s solidarity with the people and government of the Philippines.

At least 32 people were killed, and more than 134 were injured after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Sarangani province on Monday morning, according to local authorities.

Several buildings were damaged, while schools and flight operations were disrupted.

Tsunami warnings issued by multiple countries were later withdrawn.

Junie Castillo, spokesperson for the Philippines’ Office of Civil Defence, said 10 deaths were reported in General Santos, a major port city in South Cotabato. At least 12 people remain missing.

Authorities said the fatalities were caused by falling debris, building collapses and landslides.

The earthquake struck shortly after schools across the country reopened following the summer break.

Videos from educational institutions showed strong tremors forcing teachers and students to evacuate buildings or take shelter under desks.

The Philippines Department of Education ordered the suspension of classes in affected schools. The decision affected more than 5,800 students. The department took the step to ensure safety.

General Santos International Airport suspended operations from 8:45 AM to 3 PM local time for safety inspections.

Three airlines cancelled a total of 17 domestic flights.

Civil aviation authorities said airport operations would remain restricted from Monday afternoon until June 11. Only government, military and humanitarian flights will be allowed during this period.

Authorities are continuing damage assessments and recovery efforts following the disaster.
