PM Modi Embarks On Bhutan Visit To Strengthen Friendship & Shared Prosperity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day visit to the Kingdom of Bhutan from 11 to 12 November 2025, reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening its special relationship with the Himalayan nation.

The visit coincides with the celebrations marking the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth King of Bhutan, an occasion symbolising decades of enduring friendship between the two countries.

In his departure statement, PM Modi said, “It would be my honour to join the people of Bhutan as they mark the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth King. I am confident that my visit will further deepen our bonds of friendship and strengthen our efforts towards shared progress and prosperity.”

PM Modi’s visit carries strong spiritual significance as it coincides with the exposition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India.

The Prime Minister will offer prayers at the Holy Relics at Tashichhodzong in Thimphu and participate in the Global Peace Prayer Festival organised by the Royal Government of Bhutan.

Highlighting this spiritual connection, PM Modi stated, “The exposition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India reflects our two countries’ deep-rooted civilisational and spiritual ties.”

Buddhism continues to serve as a bridge between India and Bhutan, with thousands of Bhutanese pilgrims visiting Indian Buddhist sites such as Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Sarnath, and Nalanda each year.

Energy Partnership and Development Cooperation

A major highlight of the visit is the inauguration of the Punatsangchhu-II hydropower project, representing a significant milestone in India-Bhutan cooperation.

This project strengthens the countries’ long-standing energy partnership, providing clean and sustainable energy while contributing to Bhutan’s economic growth.

PM Modi’s visit also underscores India’s continued support for Bhutan’s infrastructure and developmental priorities.

The collaboration reflects a shared vision for prosperity, sustainability, and regional stability.

During his visit, PM Modi will meet His Majesty the King, the Fourth King, and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.

The meetings are expected to further enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, energy, connectivity, and education.

Recalling past engagements, PM Modi’s first overseas visit as Prime Minister in 2014 was to Bhutan.

He later undertook state visits in 2019 and 2024, during which he was honoured with Bhutan’s highest civilian award, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo—a recognition of India’s steadfast friendship and PM Modi’s personal contribution to bilateral relations.

India and Bhutan share an exemplary model of friendship and cooperation, founded on mutual trust, understanding, and goodwill.

The partnership stands as a cornerstone of India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, highlighting the importance of collaboration among neighbouring countries for peace and progress.

PM Modi’s 2025 visit reaffirms the enduring bond between India and Bhutan, focusing on shared growth, cultural unity, and sustainable development — a partnership that continues to inspire regional harmony and prosperity.
