Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday delivered a strong national address, condemning the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam as a barbaric assault that shook the country and the world.
PM Modi described the attack, which killed 26 tourists, as a vile attempt to disrupt India’s peace and unity.
Introducing a shift in India’s counterterrorism strategy, the Prime Minister declared ‘Operation Sindoor’ as the country’s new doctrine.
“After surgical strikes and airstrikes, Operation Sindoor is now India’s policy against terrorism. If India is attacked, we will respond on our terms,” PM Modi said.
Furthermore, he stressed that the government had only temporarily paused retaliatory actions against Pakistan’s military and terror infrastructure.
“Every move Pakistan makes will be measured. Our response has only been suspended, not stopped,” the Prime Minister asserted.
PM Modi reflected on the brutality of the Pahalgam attack, saying, “Innocent citizens were killed in front of their families and children, targeted for their religion. It was a horrific face of terror, a cruelty that shook the very fabric of our unity.”
Meanwhile, he reaffirmed that the armed forces had complete freedom to respond.
“Every terrorist and terror organisation now knows the cost of attacking our nation. We have given our armed forces full autonomy,” PM Modi declared.
The Prime MInister also noted the nationwide unity that followed the attack. “The entire country and all political parties stood together as one against terrorism,” he said.
PM Modi sent a direct warning to Pakistan, stating that India would not tolerate terrorism and would hold those responsible fully accountable.
His remarks mark a bold shift in India’s counterterror approach, making it clear that Operation Sindoor is both a message and a mission.
