Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced that the country had achieved its commitment to eliminate Naxalism, claiming that no district remained affected by Left-wing extremism by March 2026.
Speaking at the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas gathering in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 151st birth anniversary, PM Modi recalled his declaration at the same venue last year that India would continue its efforts until Naxalism and Maoist violence ended.
“Today, when we are gathered here exactly one year later, that resolve of the country has been fulfilled. The backbone of Naxalism has been broken,” he said.
Highlighting the change, PM Modi said Left-wing extremism affected 126 districts in 2015. He claimed that the situation had changed by March 2026, with no district remaining under its influence.
He said regions that had endured years of violence were now moving towards mainstream development. Road networks were expanding, mobile connectivity was improving, and more people were gaining access to schools and healthcare facilities.
“Young people who had earlier faced uncertainty are now getting new opportunities in education, employment and other fields,” he said.
The Prime Minister recognised security personnel who lost their lives during operations against Naxalism. He paid tribute to those who made the supreme sacrifice and welcomed families from formerly affected regions to the National Unity Day celebrations.
The parade featured anti-Naxal units from various states and central forces. Its commentary highlighted their operations, deployments and personnel killed in the line of duty.
PM Modi said, “India is now more secure and more determined. The increased confidence among citizens is linked to the country’s achievements and the sensitivity of the government and administrative system.”
Rashtriya Ekta Diwas takes place every October 31 to commemorate Patel’s birth anniversary. The government describes its campaign against Left-wing extremism as part of efforts to integrate affected regions into the development mainstream.
