Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Jose Antonio Kast after he took oath as the President of Chile, expressing hope of further strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
Taking to X, PM Modi extended his best wishes to the newly elected leader and highlighted India’s interest in expanding cooperation with Chile.
“Warm congratulations to José Antonio Kast Rist on assuming the office of the President of Chile. I look forward to working closely with him to further strengthen the warm and friendly relations between India and Chile and to deepen our cooperation across trade, technology and energy. Best wishes for a successful tenure!” the post read.
President Kast took the oath as Chile’s new president during a formal ceremony held at the National Congress Building in the coastal city of Valparaiso.
The 60-year-old leader assumed office in the presence of senior officials and diplomats, while outgoing President Gabriel Boric handed over the Piocha de O’Higgins, the traditional symbol of presidential authority.
President Kast later hosted foreign delegations in Vina del Mar. Leaders, including Felipe VI and Javier Milei, attended the ceremony.
A lawyer by profession, Kast served in Congress from 2002 to 2018, founded the Republican Party in 2019 and won the presidency last December after defeating Jeannette Jara.
